What is Pilates?
Pilates is a system of exercises practiced on special apparatus following a specific order invented by Joseph Pilates. Contrology, as Mr. Pilates called it, emphasizes balanced development of the body, core strength, spine mobility, flexibility and mind/body awareness to support efficient, graceful movement. Contrology offers a unique combination of strengthening and stretching with control. Joseph Pilates believed that the continuous practice of Contrology would restore physical fitness, help reach optimum health and in turn, achieve happiness.
Authentic Pilates is practiced on apparatus closely following Mr. Pilates' original designs with specific dimensions and spring tensions. Many different styles of Pilates exist today which differ significantly from the original work. Additionally, there are several manufacturers of Pilates equipment that have modified the apparatus to create a very different feeling.
